I’m Ella Cronin. I was born and grew up in London for 18 years till I finished college and moved to Bournemouth to be with my partner. I’m 19 now and have been running The Bambee Store since September 2012 so it’s still my baby in that sense. My store’s main products are pocket t-shirts. Most of them have a geeky theme to them and some are just popular patterns and prints.
What made you want to make Geeky stuff?
I think there was two main reasons at the time.
I always wanted a way to display my geeky side through my clothes and fashion but I wanted to be able to do it subtly instead of the more common geeky t-shirts that have massive prints on them.
The second reason was because a lot of small companies do pocket t-shirts and they’re definitely not the most original idea anymore so I really wanted to take it from a different angle than others had with a more geeky theme and by investing myself in my products by making them from fabrics themed with my favourite shows, fandoms, games etc. it means that I can really enjoy making my products, wearing them and meeting people who love the same geeky stuff as me.
What is your process for finding new ideas for products?
I just keep an eye out for what’s popular, read the suggestions I receive from customers and ask in blog posts what people would like to see. Other than that it’s just a process of lots of google searching for new fabrics and prints.
Do you tend to wear your own products and have you ever seen anything you’ve made out in the real world?
I do! I’ve made it a habit to make myself my own pocket t-shirts and I wear them probably more than I should. I always fall in love with a new product when I first make it and get very attached and make one for myself.
I’ve never seen a product of mine being worn in actual real life but people regularly send me photos of my products when they receive them or tag me on instagram or tumblr. I’ve even see one or two people wear them in videos and it’s lovely to see my products being worn all over the world.
So it’s satisfying knowing that you’re making stuff that other people enjoy?
Yeah, definitely. It always feels like a small but good achievement when people message me saying how much they love their product.
What do you think about the online Geek community?
I think what I love most about the community is how passionate they are when it comes to the geeky things they love. I find it’s a lot easier to express my geeky side within the online community rather than in the ‘real world’ so it’s just great to be able to interact with people that share the same interests and I don’t have to worry about feeling a bit ‘odd’.
What are some of your most popular items?
The ‘Heroes’ pocket t-shirt featuring classic comic book characters like Spider-man, Iron Man, Captain America, The Hulk and Thor which was recently added to our store has become the most popular in the shortest amount of time. I wasn’t prepared at all for how popular it was going to be and I’ve had to stock up on materials to keep up.
Our long time best seller is definitely the TARDIS pocket t-shirt which was one of the first pocket t-shirts to go up on our store and it seems to be a customer favourite.
Where do you hope to take your store in the future?
I’m currently looking into the possibly of printing my own fabric. Which means I could start designing my very own fabric and the possibilities for new pocket t-shirts would be endless which I am incredibly excited about.
Me and my partner are also looking into sublimation printing, meaning I can expand my choice of products and not just sell pocket t-shirts but also bags, ipad sleeves. mouse mats, cushions and so many more things. I’m hoping to take my store in that direction in the near future and just keep growing as a business.
